In 1927, psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik observed that restaurant waiters could remember complex unpaid orders with total clarity, but forgot those exact orders the moment the bill was paid. This psychological principle is known as the Zeigarnik Effect: the human brain remembers uncompleted tasks and unanswered questions far better than resolved ones.

Amateur video writers make the fatal mistake of linear resolution: they ask a question, answer it thirty seconds later, and then move on to an unrelated point. The moment you resolve the central mystery, the viewer's brain feels satisfied and clicks away.

Elite storytellers build nested loops. Before closing Loop A, they open Loop B. By keeping at least one unresolved thread active throughout the video, you make abandoning the video feel psychologically uncomfortable.

THE DO'S

✓ Layer your loops: Open Loop B at least two minutes before resolving Loop A to prevent retention drop-offs.
✓ Deliver genuine payoffs: Always resolve your primary open loop by the video's end; unfulfilled promises kill subscriber trust.
✓ Script physical visual anchors: Support verbal questions with mysterious physical objects, documents, or blurry photos on screen.
✓ Reiterate the stakes periodically: Remind the audience why answering the open loop matters to the characters or real world.

THE DON'TS

✗ Don't use clickbait deception: If your open loop promises an answer that the video never delivers, viewers will leave negative comments and dislike.
✗ Don't resolve tension at the 50% mark: Answering the biggest question mid-way through causes the back half of your analytics curve to collapse.
✗ Don't open ten loops at once: Too many simultaneous mysteries confuse the viewer and make the script feel disorganized.
